Page At a Time - PAT - PROCESS
Hi Damarys,
It’s so great to hear from you. Thank you so much for your hospitality, Kate and I had a great time visiting your classroom. We came away very impressed with your enthusiasm and leadership.
These are the steps to follow in terms of starting the design process.
Goals-
Firstly, the goal of this year’s Page a Time project is twofold for your class. The primary goal is for you class to design a book (or books if you wish) that focuses on a conflict and it possible resolution. The secondary objective, is to share your experiences of the design process with the middle school students so that they learn from you how to go about making their own separate class book. Most likely the middle school will work on only ONE book.
How you will do it-
First steps for you:
#1) Define conflict. To do this brainstorm with the class. Think about personal experiences as well as formal definitions found in different dictionaries.
#2) Once you have compiled a “universe” of ideas, begin to separate the most important ones in the following categories:Personal conflict
- Military conflict
- Economic conflict
- Social conflict
- Modern conflict
#3) Choose the top 5 conflicts – and provide evidence (through research in newspapers, or books) as to why you think these conflicts merit having a hand-make book creation.
# 4) Record your process in NING network or the PAT blog. I will send you an invite for both at your hotmail address. You can document the process by taking pictures and writing a summary or by creating a series of short videos clips (like a mini movie) explaining how you went about defining conflict.
#5) When you come to the museum you will class members make a presentation (that I will record on video) that explain to me #1) how you defined conflict, #2) the reasons for choosing the top 5 conflicts and what evidence you have to support your choice of conflict. Why should a topic be chosen as the subject of a hand-made book? At this time we can also discuss what direction to take in terms of creating a book. Will you make one book for the whole class, or several? What are the pros and cons?
#6) During your field trip we will also discuss the ways you will be assisting the middle school students more concretely.
